SWANSEA - Funeral service for John Vernon Wonderly, 64, U.S. Marine Corps (Ret.), S.C. Highway Patrol (Ret.), will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, October 14, 2010, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Mr. Wonderly died October 9, 2010. Born December 23, 1945, in Dayton, Ohio, he was a son of the late Laverne and Betty Lindsay Wonderly. His 22 years of service in the United States Marine Corps included two tours in Vietnam, one tour in Beirut and Operation Desert Storm. He trained troops at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. He was a very dedicated and loyal Marine and S.C. state trooper who retired from both professions. A loving husband, father and grandfather, he enjoyed basketball and running; he ran in many benefit races. Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Kathy Wonderly; daughter, Kim Elder (Jim) of Litchfield, Ohio; sons, Greg Amadeo of Columbia, Mike Wonderly (Kathy) of Connecticut; grandchildren, Sammi and Brandon Elder, Lily and Landon Wonderly; beloved dog, Peanut; sisters, Carol Dilgard and Debbie Wonderly, both of Dayton, Ohio; brother, Jerry Wonderly of Indianapolis, Ind.; many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother and one sister. Memorials may be made to the U.S.M.C.
