Lawrence Dean Horner, loving son of Mary Margaret Horner and the late Willis Henry Horner, and beloved husband of Beverly Horner of Tracy’s Landing, MD, passed away on July 8, 2012. Mr. Horner is dearly missed by his wife, Beverly; his three sons, Jason, Joshua and Jacob; their wives, Stacy, Jennifer and Meghan; his grandchildren, Camden, Logan, Josie, Keira, Lucia and Ali; and his brother, Robert Horner, and sister, Lynne Busse. He was born on August 16, 1946 in Dayton, Ohio. Mr. Horner enlisted in the United States Air force on July 18, 1967 and completed officer’s school in 1978. He served 28 years before retiring on March 31, 1996. During his service, Mr. Horner was the Correspondence Controller and Branch Chief, in the Correspondence and Control Division, and the executive officer in the Headquarters, Defense Courier service, Ft. Meade, Maryland. He also served as a squadron and student squadron commander, and Chief of Administration at the 4357th Technical Training Wing, Chanute AFB, Illinois. Upon his retirement from active duty, Mr. Horner was hired as a Correspondence Controller in what was known then as the Correspondence and Directives Directorate, Washington Headquarters Services. He served the Executive Services Directorate in a civilian capacity for another 12 years before retiring in 2007. Mr. Horner’s distinguished record of service to the Nation includes more than 40 years of military and civilian service. During his civilian tenure, he served six Secretaries of Defense, Eight Deputy Secretaries of Defense, and four Executive Services Directors. His work in the directorate spanned the end of the Cold War, Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, the attacks on the Pentagon and Work Trade Center on September 11, 2001, and Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Upon retirement, Larry spent several months around the Christmas holiday each year in Park City, UT, where he enjoyed skiing and spending time with family. At home on the Chesapeake Bay, he could be found in his wood shop, working on house or garden projects. He loved laughing with his sons and was deeply proud of their accomplishments. Mr. Horner reveled in wife’s companionship and enjoyed doting on their grandchildren. He was a dedicated member of his church, Jesus the Good Shepherd Catholic Church, in Owings MD. There will be a public visitation on Sunday, July 15, 2012 from 2:00-5:00 pm at the Lee Funeral Home, 8200 Jennifer Lane, Owings, MD 20736. Services will be held on Monday, July 16, 2012, at 11:00 am at Jesus the Good Shepherd, 1601 West Mt. Harmony Road, Owings, MD 20736. He will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
