Boston Globe, The (MA) - April 18, 1984 - James K. Spellmeyer, 37, news director of Boston radio station WHTT, died Sunday in his Boston home. He had been ill with cancer. Mr. Spellmeyer was director of news and public affairs at WHTT and did on- air newscasts at the CBS-owned and operated FM station where he began in 1975 when it was known as WEEI-FM. Mr. Spellmeyer was the station's first full-time music director, a post in which he led the the station to a recognized voice in Boston radio during the 1970s. Named the station's first manager of computer operations and its production director, he began doing news in 1979 as an anchor and writer- produce r of several recorded features, such as "Contact" and "Boston Skyline." He also co-hosted and produced the public affairs program "Encounter," heard at 8 Sunday mornings. Mr. Spellmeyer's career began in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, his home state, as an announcer at WMVO-AM/FM/TV. He came to Boston in 1972, working briefly as an announcer at WEZE before joining the American Program Bureau as a copywriter and publicity-promotion assistant. He was a member of the New England Broadcast Assn., the National Broadcast Assn. for Community Affairs, and the National Broadcast Editorial Assn. Born in Dayton, he attended the University of Dayton as an English major. He leaves his wife, Terry (Callahan) of Boston; his parents, Robert A. and Theresia (King) Spellmeyer of Dayton; three sisters, Susan Conley of Dayton, Christine Fouts of Atlanta, Ga., and Jacqueline Kolb of West Palm Beach, Fla. A funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. today in Corpus Christi Church in the Auburndale section of Newton. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Chestnut Hill.
