Asta McNally Kiawah Island, SC - Asta Maria McNally, 70, of Johns Island, SC, wife of Mr. John 'Jack' McNally, entered into eternal rest Saturday, August 27, 2016. The relatives and friends of Jack and Asta McNally are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM Saturday, September 3, 2016, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 3871 Betsy Kerrison Parkway, Johns Island. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Immediately following there will be a light luncheon on premises in the Family Life Center. Online Condolences may be offered at www.CharlestonFunerals.com. Asta is survived by her husband Jack, her son Andrew McNally (Jennifer), her two daughters: Kathleen Brownsdon (Nathanial) and Christine McNally Inge (Kenneth); her brother, Dr. Raymond Dysas (Teri Hobbs), her nephew Tyler Dysas, and six grandchildren: Elijah McNally, Ella and Molly Brownsdon, and Kendall, Joseph and Milena Inge. Asta was born in Augsburg, Germany on April 25, 1946. She and her parents - Dr. Algirdas Dysas and Aldona Elsbergas Dysas (both deceased) - emigrated to the United States in 1950, settling first in Waukegan, Illinois, eventually moving to Dayton, Ohio where she and her brother attended parochial elementary and high schools. An excellent student at all levels, Asta earned an undergraduate degree and a masters degree in English at the University of Dayton. After getting a degree in special education, she took a position as a teacher in the university's pre-school. After moving to Kiawah Island, SC, Asta indulged in her love for flowers by working as a floral designer for several of the Charleston area's finest florists. She loved reading, interior decorating, gardening, shell collecting, cooking, dining out and - most of all - raising her three children. An avid reader, Asta had a special fondness for the poetry of e.e. cummings. Her favorite cummings poem was "I carry your heart with me [I carry it in]" "Here is the deepest secret nobody knows (here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud and the sky of a sky of a tree called life; which grows higher than soul can hope or mind can hide) and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart i carry your heart (I carry it in my heart)" In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, PO Box 4527, New York, NY 10163. Arrangements by James A. McAlister, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston, SC. (843) 766-1365. Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston
